About

The settlement originated as early as the 17th century, and Strandgata (formerly Sandgaden) is the district's oldest street. Remains of a stranded vessel from the Iron Age have been found. Traditionally, Torstrand has been a working-class district. The industry, including glassworks, has been located along the sea. Today (2010) this has changed. Torstrand can offer a wide range of school and educational opportunities: Mesterfjellet school and Thor Heyerdahl upper secondary school. Larvik harbor, one of Norway's largest harbors, is located on Torstrand. Smiestranda is a bathing place. Karistranda is a marina.
